The Winning Halloween Costume

Isn't Kyle the cutest octopus you have ever seen? He even had a little swagger of a walk so that the tentacles swayed a bit. He definitely knew that he was the center of attention! He did a good job of holding his Elmo bucket due to the fact that it held all the goods that he didn't want taken away! (A special thank you to Val Nikolaus for the "super cute" costumes!)

Goodbye Tata Tony

Tony passed away tonight at 4:20pm. Lucy, Amanda, and Nunie were all present as he slipped away. The funeral will be in Yuma tentatively on the 1st of November.

Thank you all for you support. When I talked to Amanda tonight her spirits were up. They got a hotel room and were all going to get to sleep in a bed for the first time since Saturday night.

Wednesday updates

I talked with Amanda this morning and found out the the Neurologist did indeed tell the family that Tony would never wake up. The EEG brain Scan showed very little activity. They decided to pull the life support equipment last night as that was Tony's desire should he ever be in this situation. Tony has been breathing on his own for over 13 hours. I understand it is very labored and it was described as a snore. Amanda has accepted that her Dad is gone.

She is great full for your words of encouragement.

*** Afternoon Update ***
Tony is still breathing but his oxygen levels are going down and his heart rate has become irregular. Amanda and her sister are scheduled to come home tomorrow but we both think that some one should stay with her mom. So at this point we are unsure of her return status.

Update on Amanda's Dad

I was hoping to give better updates on Tony's situation today, but I did not get to communicate with Amanda much and I was not clear on what was happening. So I withheld from posting an update as I was not sure what the news was. After thinking about this and realizing that a lot of people are hoping for even the small amount of information I am getting I decided to start posting what I get.

This morning I talked to Amanda. She was on the way to the YMCA with her mom who was going to take a shower. The hospital staff has been wonderful. They located some blankets and pillows for them to use last night and the three of them (Amanda, her mom and her sister) slept in the waiting room. The staff also was lenient on the visiting hours rule and did not make them leave. Amanda said the Nurses have been caring, compassionate, and informative.

She mentioned that 2 Doctors this morning gave discouraging prognosis about Tony's mental state. They don't fell that he mentally survived the heart failures. One, according to Amanda, lacked any bed side manner and was quite blunt with his negative assessment. Tony was still not well enough to be moved for a Cat Scan. They were still waiting for the Neurologist to give them his opinion.

This afternoon they will still waiting for the Neurologist to talk to them. Amanda however was very upbeat that her dad was recovering. She stated that he responded to her touching his foot. She also felt that he was moving one side of his body. I was very surprised by this sudden attitude change and I am still confused of what was going on at this time.


Amanda gave me a quick call tonight to give me an update from ICU. After talking to the Neurologist tonight, it was decided to take Tony off life support tonight. He is breathing on his own currently. I am not sure if this is positive news, Amanda could not talk for more than the quick 1 minute call. I am afraid that if she is not wanting to step out to give me a better update that they are fearing for this to be a negative move.

On Sunday night, Amanda's father suffered heart failure while out of state on vacation in Tennessee. They had to use the electric paddles to get him going. He is still in a coma and on a respirator. The nurses fear that he did not have oxygen flowing to his brain for too long and that he will either not wake up, or have severe brain damage.

The nurses also said to have any family that can, come in to say good byes and make peace. We were able to get Amanda and her sister on a flight this morning to TN. Who knew those frequent flyer miles from all my work trips would get such good use?

Another less tragic but still sentimental loss on Sunday, somehow the stone from Amanda's wedding ring fell out earlier on Sunday. We have not been able to locate it. Amanda was heart broken about that even before she found out about her dad.

If you can leave an encouraging comment for her here or possible leave a voice mail mesg I know Amanda would appriecreat it greatly. She can't receive calls in the hospital so make sure you let her know if you call.

Tough Guys Belong in the Big Boy Room

Kyle started the 1 & 2 year old room today! Mommy cried, but Kyle was a champ. The teachers said he had a really good day and an easy transition. Way to go Kyle! Now that he is in there, he needed some battle scars to show the kids how tough he is. This happened on our evening walk. He got loose from the latch in the wagon. And the rest, well... it's a nice bruise! Shiner number... too many to count!

We have a climber!

Yes, our son is officially a climber! We stood behind him, but he did climb this ladder ALL BY HIMSELF! We were stunned, but of course, oh so proud! That's some coordination! I think he gets that from his Mommy! :)

Kyle is headed to the "Big Boy Room"

Well, the time has come. Very soon, Kyle is headed to the 1 and 2 year old room at school. They were waiting for him to walk better. Sure enough he's taking off. This last week he has walked more than he's crawled. (Sniff, sniff!) He's growing up. Other big boy things he has been doing for a while now: no bottle only a sippy cup or a regular cup with a bendy straw, drinking whole milk, taking only one scheduled nap a day, wearing shoes all day (except at home- gotta let those feet air out), and giving his little hands to his Mommy and Daddy during prayer . Time flies! We are enjoying every minute of him. He has such a great personality. There are many words to describe this little bundle of joy! He's so much fun!

These are both fun! I'll take them with me!

Kyle is a one-year old!

We finally got around to posting his birthday pictures. I was beginning to think he was going to be two by the time we got this up. Sorry to all of the Kyle fans out there!

Kyle had a blast at his party. It was just family that came to celebrate. Next year we'll invite all of his friends. Kyle was thrilled to have his Yuma family down to celebrate his "birthday week." He had plenty of attention from his Nana Fucy, Tata Tony, Nana Ophie, Cousin Allie, and Cousin Matt. Everyone would go to bed exhausted from all the fun!

What is Kyle up to these days? Well let's see... he's definitely a good eater! He takes after his mom in that he LOVES CARBS! Anything pasta, Kyle is all over it. When we go to restaurants, people have to stop and stare as he devours his food. It definitely is a messy, yet enjoyable sight. He still loves his veggies too! He is completely on big people food. He hasn't had a jar of baby food in I don't know how long. He's still a scooting machine. Man he's fast! YES, he finally has taken a few steps. He loves playing the "walk to mommy, walk to daddy" game. He shows a huge smile on his face for this trick. He stands up unassisted all the time too. Yeah for the big boy! He still plays like no other. He loves running using his push toy walkers. He loves to throw balls and play with his trucks (sound effects and all). There is never a dull moment in the Schultz home! He's everywhere! :)
